Printers Plan Server Migration. Follow
In this article, we will go over the process of migrating a Printers Plan server to a new machine.
When setting this up, we do not actually need to install Printers Plan, as the application more than likely will not be running on the server. What we need to do is migrate these files to the new server and create a network share so the workstations can access them.
Keep in mind if you are running IIS on your server to use Web2Plan you will need to go through the IIS installation guide found here: Web Solutions Installation Guide
Collecting the Data
For our first step, you will need to copy files from the installation directory. Everything in the Printer's Plan folder should be copied as this folder contains all the files that are required by the workstation. Below is a list of crucial files for the Printer's Plan workstations. If something does not work properly, please verify that all of these files were transferred over.
- PlanData.mdb - This is the Printers Plan Database
- PlanWin.pp - This is the Printers Plan license file
- Email Templates - This is a folder named Email
- Microsoft Word shipping templates. These will be in the Printer's Plan folder and all began with a file name of Shipping
- Open Office shipping templates. These will be in a folder named templates
- Documents attached to jobs - This is a folder named Documents and contains various sub-folders of PDF documents that may be attached to jobs as well as purchase order templates
- Company Logos - These will be bitmap files that
Setting up the share
Copy the Printers Plan folder from the USB drive to the C:\ Drive of the new server, all files that were in this original folder should be in the new folder.
Once this is done right-click on the new Printer's Plan folder and select Properties.
In the properties, window click the sharing tab and then click share under the network path.
Next, you will need to allow everyone group to access this folder.
If you do not see the everyone group listed here, use the search bar to type in "everyone" and click add, they will now appear on this list.
Use the arrow to adjust the permission level to Read/Write for the everyone group, this will ensure our workstation can access all of the files that they need. Once this is done you will be greeted with a window telling you that your folder has been shared.
Our final step will be to notate the UNC path of this folder, we will need this when we connect to the new server. To gather this information, simply right-click on the Printers Plan folder and select Properties.
Navigate to the Sharing tab and the network path will be listed.
Repointing the Workstations
Once the migration is complete, we will need to disconnect the database from the old server so workstations on the new server can find this migrated server.
The easiest way to do this is to disconnect all workstations from Printers Plan and rename the database (PlanData.mdb) on the old server to something else.
When Printers Plan starts on one of the workstations it will notify you that it can not find the database and you need to locate it.
Click Yes and a file explorer will pop up.
Delete all of the information from the search bar and input the UNC path of the Printers Plan Folder.
Next, it will ask you for a username and password.
This is the username and password for the login account of the server, in order to access these files each individual workstation must be authenticated by that server to access the data.
Once the credentials have been input you will see all the files that you had migrated, please select the PlanData.mdb file and click open.
